Whilst continuing to translate and distribute Bibles worldwide, Bible Society is also working to make the Bible heard in our own culture in England and Wales, where the bible has virtually disappeared from the day-to-day reality of people's lives. We work with global alliance of supporters, churches and over 130 Bible Societies around the world. Bible Society was established in 1804 by a group of people including William Wilberforce and Thomas Charles to encourage the 'wider circulation and use' of the Scriptures. We're still working on this mission today. We believe that the Bible is an extraordinary collection of books, worth reading and part of the solution to today's big issues. We make Scriptures available where there are none. We help the churches use and teach them. And we try to promote the Bible through the arts, education, media and politics.
