White Cross Mission

The Diocese of Truro responded to the plight of the abandoned, disabled, children found in appalling conditions on the downfall of communism and the death of dictator Nicolae Ceaucescu in Romania. The White Cross Mission was formed and a programme of recuperation was started with the children in institutions in 2 mountain villages in the foothills of the Western Carpathian mountains. It soon became obvious that many of these disabilities were the result of early childhood traumas &, after a long battle to persuade the authorities that it was feasible, we bought a smallholding in the countryside and 6 children moved in, in 1996. We now have 5 smallholdings and a small cottage housing a total 32 of these children, who now enjoy the freedom and Education that they were so long denied
